01. Courtship (björk intro playing flute) (22-05-2018)
02. The Anchor Song (22-05-2018)
björk, brings flutes/flutists and flora to her first TV performance in 8 years !! mesmerising, opulent and beautiful. show review:
who would have guessed that björk’s performance tonight on later…with jools holland marked her first television appearance in eight years !! after all, the gorgeous 52 year old icelandic/nordic singer has released three studio albums in that time 2011’s 'biophilia', 2015’s 'vulnicura', and last year’s 'utopia' so you’d think she would have popped up on TV somewhere in there.
no matter. björk, was in fine form on the small screen, bringing her latest artful stage show to life with utopia’s “courtship” along with “the anchor song” from 1993’s 'debut'. both performances saw björk, accompanied by a woodwind section, including a choir of flutists. if you recall, björk previously expressed interest in releasing a live version of 'utopia' featuring more flutes, and this was a pretty mesmerizing preview.
björk, performed on television for the first time in eight years on the may, 22nd episode of later…with jools holland. reminiscent of a gathering of woodland nymphs on a leafy set, björk, started on stage with her and her flutists playing a flute intro to 'courtship' wearing a beautiful 2-layer rubber costume with her japanese in style jet black 'utopia' album cover wig/hairdo with a very high-cut fringe that accompanied her vagina facepiece. and she wore an elaborate vagina facepiece mask, headpiece made by james merry, and she was joined by costumed flutists for versions of “courtship” (from 2017’s excellent utopia) and “the anchor song” (from 1993’s debut)
björk, is gearing up for sets at "all points east" in london and "primavera sound" in barcelona over the next couple of weeks. her EP of remixes comes out on “slug genitalia colored” 12? vinyl on friday (5/25), complete with a cover image of a slug sculpted by visual artist and frequent collaborator jesse kanda.
björk, doesn't so much perform on a stage "she inhabits a space".
if you've never had the opportunity to witness her live, it's worth watching the concert films that surround her thoughtfully curated tours. she transforms the stage and employs musicians that are sympathetic to both the records and her broader vision for them, whether the sparse and white set for vespertine live with matmos, and harpist zeena parkins, the dayglo-rich 'voltaïc' featuring horns, lots of forward-thinking electronics and frenzied drummers; and the cosmic 'biophilia' live with a female choir.
this time, the icelandic composer brought her flute orchestra to later...with jools holland, her first television performance since performing "cosmogony" on 'the colbert report' in 2012. surrounded by voluminous flora and what can only be described as a 'vagina' they perform "courtship" from last year's 'Utopia' and a stunning version of "the anchor song," originally released on 'debut' in 1993. the latter, in particular, makes incredible use of the song's space, with a flute arrangement that blooms in and out of björk's oceanic meditations on home.
with a set constructed to give the appearance of an artificial 'utopia' paradise, the icelandic artist shared the stage with the flute septet viibra, london-based composer manu delago, on percussion and icelandic producer bergur Þórisson, on the electronics.
björk, turned the jools holland stage into a gorgeous oasis, surrounded by vegetation, the usually bare space looked like paradise. (I was big into tumblr as a teen, so naturally this aesthetic is like catnip to me.)
björk, played flute during 'utopia's' "courtship". pieces of the set also looked like they were pulled straight from 'utopia'. björk, is about to release her 'arisen my senses' EP, which includes excellent remixes from Jlin, and kelly lee owens, it is going to be released on "slug genitalia covered vinyl", because what else would you expect?
