i would like to thank all for the monumental good energy thats been washed upon us playing these concerts !!!!! ive never felt anything like it ! with only 2 left im getting super mushy : i would like to thank the musicians manu delago , alarm will sound and especially arca , whos made new arrangements : this beacon of fertility played proper dress up with my old songs made them all shiny and new !!!
music is a beast best suited for concert halls : and i was blessed enough this time around to try amongst the new york finest : carnegie hall , the magnificent newly renovated kings theatre in brooklyn and the intimate city center . this time around ive kept the staging and theatricals minimal , let it all be about the music , the notation , the listeners . these temples of music are an ancient idea and not a coincidence that they work ! hurray to gigs !!! im grateful !! looking forward to seeing you for those 2 remaining shows !!

Hear a full recording of Björk’s Vulnicura live show.

Björk brought her Vulnicura tour to New York’s City Center Theater last night with support from Arca, percussionist Manu Delago, and a fifteen-piece orchestra called Alarm Will Sound. New York live music archivist NYCTaper was on hand to capture a recording of the concert, which is the first of three to take place at the venue this week.

Björk played the first six tracks of Vulnicura in order for the first half of her performance. The second set consisted of both old and new material, closing with Vulnicura’s final two tracks and a further two encores. For the first encore, Björk performed ‘Sun In My Mouth’ from 2001 album Vespertine.

You can stream and download the entire concert below. [via NYCTaper / Stereogum]

Björk's New York City residency, about seven shows over two months plus a retrospective at MoMA, is a dream come true for fans and, fortunately at least, her live show delivers.
Björk
(25 Mar 2015: NY City Center — New York)
Björk, along with collaborator Arca, is currently nearing the end of a series of shows in New York City in support of her latest album, Vulnicura. After a couple of nights at Carnegie Hall and a couple at the new Brooklyn venue King’s Theater, Björk will wrap up the mini-residency at NY City Center (two performances remain). So far, every night has featured almost the entirety of Björk’s latest album Vulnicura, a breakup record, with the addition of the Alarm Will Sound string ensemble and Manu Delago on percussion. Although I had never seen Björk before, I know she’s a cutting edge artist on many levels—visually, fashionably, sonically. So it was no surprise to see some of her fans have a unique fashion sense of their own. Of course, their attire couldn’t be topped by Björk’s own—she had donned a unique spiky headdress from designer Maiko Takeda for the first half of her performance.

As for the performance itself, NYCTaper has some nice words about the show, “The austere setting was right for the somber nature of the first set of the show as Björk moved chronologically through the first six tracks of Vulnicura — appropriate since the album itself chronicles the deterioration of the relationship in stages…  the second set represented a very clear shift in attitude. Björk reappeared in a playful purple outfit with her hair down and proceeded to prance around the stage while playing a series of classic material”. They highly recommend catching an upcoming show if possible but if not, NYCTaper was able to produce a recording of the first night at City Center that has since been removed at the request of Björk’s label.

For those looking for an even stronger Björk fix, The Museum of Modern Art opened a retrospective on her career in advance of these shows. It features her costumes, music videos and more over the years. Unfortunately however, it was resoundingly panned by critics. That, and the lack of audio from the show is all the more reason to see her live.

This is the 16 bit version of this recording, for CD burning.  The sound in the venue
was superb, and the crowd behavior at this concert was outstanding.  As a result,
I had a direct line to the stacks at approximately 150 feet, and there is virtually no
extraneous noise on the recording.   Enjoy!

info: It was announced in September, and it almost seemed too miraculous to be true. The concert was scheduled on my actual Birthday! But when the travel package was posted on the icelandair website, the concept of flying 2500 miles to Iceland became a reality.

Oh, and what a reality–four days of celebration in a city that loves its nightlife. Reykjavik is perhaps the most fun city in Europe. Sandwiched in the middle was the reunion concert, which as you can tell from this recording, was sublimely magnificent. The band was tight, energetic, motivated, and was having a ball. As were we.

If you were interested in this concert, you’ve undoubtedly seen many youtube clips of varying quality. At some point there was discussion of an official release, but all the members have moved on, and that seems highly unlikely. What nyctaper.com presents is the only complete recording of this concert, and in outstanding audio quality. I was able to record the concert with my best equipment, and the Icelandic audience was attentive and charming.

info: If Bjork’s May performances in New York–her initial return to touring after nearly four years off–were perhaps somewhat timid and apprehensive, tonight’s Madison Square Garden performance was powerful, aggressive, and vocally outstanding. Bjork has regained all of her vocal chops after four months on the road and she seems to be relaxed, in charge, and having fun. Additionally, the band was tight and fluid, and the setlist has added a several new numbers.

My recording was made from the 5th row of the seating section, directly in line with the right PA stacks. As a result, the recording is clear, and rich in bass presence. I utilized the DPA uni-directional microphones so that much of the chatter behind and to my left is hardly noticeable. This is the same recording rig and similar position to the White Stripes MSG recording from July.

REMASTERED VERSION

Digital Master Recording
Recorded from Front of Board Center
Orchestra Row PP, Seat 509

DPA 4021's > Marantz PMD-660 (Oade BCM) > 16bit 44.1 .wav >
Soundforge (level boosts and balance, softening and some removal
of audience noise, EQ, set fades) > CDWave 1.95 (tracking) > Flac
Frontend (level 7, align sector boundaries) > flac

The original flac files of this concert were uploaded to dimeadozen within
3 hours of the end of the concert.  In the rush to uplaod, no post-production
work was done on the original wav file, which was a mistake.

For the remaster, I extracted the original master wav file from its archive disc
(no errors).  In Soundforge 8.0, I boosted and balanced the levels, which were
simply too low on the master.  I smoothed, softened, or removed dozens of
instances of crowd noise--close clapping, shouts, screams, and the like.
Additionally, I equalized by boosting the highs, which were muffled either in
the PA system, or because of the mesh hat where the DPA mics were mounted.
The results of this remaster job have created a drastic improvement of the
quality of this recording.

info: Bjork began her 18-month worldwide tour in promotion of the new album Volta with a week of three concerts in three different venues in New York. The first night at Radio City was her first concert in the U.S. in almost four years, and with new material and an all new band, the result was the most restrained of the three NYC shows. Nevertheless, the concert was a triumphant return to the stage for Bjork, with several pleasant surprises in the setlist.

I recorded this concert from a prime location with pro-quality DPA microphones. However, in my rush to upload this concert to a bit torrent site within 3 hours of the end of the show, I did not perform any post-production work. The remaster posted below was the result of many hours of post-production work in Soundforge which improved the initial recording drastically. The volume levels were increased significantly and balanced, dozens of instances of close clapping or other audience noise were softened or removed, and the high-end peaks were accentuated through equalization.

This recording is dedicated to my friends in the Bjork Hub, the most reliable and dedicated fans of any artist anywhere.

rcmh tix

This recording is in an indirect way responsible for the existence of the nyctaper website. Prior to the establishment of this site, I posted my masters on various bit torrent trackers, and in several instances my recordings were then compressed to low-quality mp3s and re-posted without any credit or attribution on bottom-feeder blogs.

In this case of this recording, the blogger not only failed to give credit, but also deleted my comments and insulted me when I sought credit. One of those insults ironically “suggested” that I create my own blog where I could host lossless downloads and pay the server fees. Eight days later, I did.

show review:
Bjork, whose onstage comments were minimal, was in particularly powerful voice, even if she did need to occasionally strain to be heard over the loud, bass-heavy sound mix. She frequently hopped and ran in place with a physicality that apparently extended to Antony, who in their superb debut Dull Flame of Desire manically jumped up and down as if he was being fed electrical charges.
The show featured more than its share of quiet but still-powerful moments as well, like Bjork’s tremulous rendition of "I See Who You Are," accompanied by Min’s delicate playing.
The physical production, featuring video screens, swirling lights and elaborate laser projections, well complemented the enveloping power of the music.
